Drinks Inspired by Your Favorite Horror Films

It’s October, and that means you’ve started breaking out all your favorite horror movies to pop into your VCR. Okay, they’re most likely blu-rays but the point is there’s no better time to watch scary movies than now! Whether you love the classics, or love the new directions the genre’s taking, these cocktails make for perfect pairings with your next movie night.

The Blob

  • 1 part cranberry juice

  • 1 ½ part vodka

  • 1 part Grenadine

  • 1 part Blue Curacao

The inspiration for this drink is the 1958 sci-fi horror The Blob. Mix the vodka, cranberry juice, grenadine, blue curacao, and ice in a shaker. Pour into a glass and be sure to pour out any unfinished drinks or else they’ll engulf your house, then the neighborhood shortly after.

Shark Bite

  • ¾ oz spiced rum

  • ¾ oz light rum

  • ½ oz lime juice

  • ½ oz Blue Curacao

  • Grenadine

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws makes even the bravest souls afraid of water; the good news is there’s no way a shark’s getting into a glass. You can make this drink by pouring spiced rum, light rum, lime juice, and Blue Curacao into a glass over ice. Top with the grenadine to give the effect of blood on the water. A forewarning, you might need a bigger glass.

The Further

  • 1 ½ oz Silver Rum

  • ¾ oz Blue Curacao

  • 1/4 oz pomegranate juice

This cocktail is inspired by this year’s chilling new entry in the Insidious series. Mix the rum, Blue Curacao, and pomegranate juice into a mixing glass. Pour over ice and hold onto your soul.

The Overlook

  • 3 oz Advocaat

  • 1 oz Jack Daniels

  • Ground nutmeg

An accidental spill in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining inspired this bourbon cocktail. Mix the Jack Daniels with the Advocaat into a shaker, be sure to mix well since the Advocaat is egg based. Pour the drink into a glass over ice, and add a dash of ground nutmeg over the top.

Elm St. Nightmare

  • ½ oz cherry brandy

  • 1 ½ oz gin

  • ½ oz madeira

  • 1 tsp orange juice

Despite the name, this might turn out to be the drink of your dreams.  Mix the gin, cherry brandy, madeira, and orange juice in a shaker then strain into a cocktail glass. Top off the drink with a cherry for an added burst of flavor at the end. Step 4, better lock your door. 5, 6….

Zombie

  • 1 ½ oz golden rum

  • 1 ½ oz Jamaican rum

  • ½ oz mixed grapefruit juice and cinnamon syrup

  • 1 oz lime juice

  • ¼ oz grenadine

  • 2 dashes of absinthe

Hollywood not only gave us classic horror films, but also cocktails that have withstood the test of time. Making this drink involves more ingredients than you’d usually use, but the end result definitely packs a punch. Mix the rum, grapefruit juice and cinnamon mixture, lime juice, grenadine, and absinthe (if available) into a shaker and pour into a glass over ice. This is a strong drink, so be careful or your party might look more like a scene from Night of the Living Dead, without the cannibalism, hopefully.
